(Pasted off old site!) Douglas Athletic started off in 1987 using an old ambulance as changing rooms and team bus. The then Manager was Mac Dunbar and young Jocky Stewart was his assistant. The team finished bottom of the Welfare 5th Division in their first season but have come a long way since. In season 1990-91 they reached their first final ever courtesy of gaining byes in every round and still lost 5-4 to St. Michaels. Further heartache was to follow in season 1993-94 when finishing runners up in Division 2 and losing to Fairfied Utd on penalties in the final of the Gilfeather Cup. The following season the Dark Blues split into two teams. The 'B' team joing the 4th Division and the 'A' team stepping up to the 1st. This idea was deemed a huge success with the 'B' team winning the Dog Green Trophy and the 'A' team winning the Livingstone Shield. In season 1995-96 the 'A' team lost a number of players and called it a day but the 'B' team made up for that by winning the 3rd Division title and the Division 3 League Cup. In season 1996-97 Douglas finished runner up in Division 2 and were back in their rightful place in Division 1. In season 1998-99 the Dark Blues reached the Livingstone Shield Final but controvertially lost 2-1 to Annfield. The following season Douglas struggled near the foot of the table but still reached the final of the Gilfeather Cup where they trounced arch rivals Broty Central 4-0. They also won their own soccer sixes to make it an enjoyable double. In season 2000-01 the Douglas side played the best football of any side in the league but still finished 3rd in the top flight. At the end of that season, the team decided to sever all ties with the Welfare League and join the Sunday Morning League who were delighted to accept them. Enjoying themselves will still be the main objective. |
